Overview
Tastiota is a 120 MW utility-scale solar generation plant in Mexico. Operating in high-ambient desert conditions, the site demands strict adherence to thermal limits, dust filtration, and robust electrical protection.
My role encompassed technical commissioning, inverter parameterization, site acceptance testing, and operator training to ensure operational readiness.
Scope & Execution
- Pre-Energization QA: Visual audits, torque checking, insulation resistance tests, and verification of auxiliary systems.
- Inverter Parameterization: Protection curves, grid synchronization settings, and utility compliance parameters.
- Thermal & Operational Monitoring: Evaluating cooling airflow, filter hygiene, and inverter operating temperatures during initial power ramp-ups.
- Technical Handover: Conducting Level 1 troubleshooting training for site technicians to build on-site operational independence.
Field Lessons
- Thermal Management Dictates Uptime: In desert climates, intake filter cleanliness and heat-exchanger performance directly dictate power availability and prevent derating.
- Direct Measurement Beats Assumptions: Relying on calibrated field measurements rather than theoretical assumptions is essential when diagnosing transient errors during energization.
