Moon Palace BESS is a 12.5 MW / 24 MWh battery energy storage system in Mexico, engineered to deliver power quality stabilization, peak demand support, and reliable backup capability.
Battery energy storage introduces rigorous safety imperatives beyond conventional solar PV. Commissioning high-voltage electrochemical storage demands strict DC safety protocols, battery management system (BMS) communication validation, and seamless coordination with bidirectional power conversion systems (PCS).
Technical Scope
- Power Conversion Systems (PCS): Commissioning bidirectional inverter blocks capable of rapid four-quadrant active and reactive power dispatch.
- BMS & Safety Interlocks: Validating rack communication links, insulation monitoring, emergency-stop loops, and thermal trip interlocks.
- Safety Governance: Executing Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), electrical safety protocols (NFPA 70E), and dry-contact fire suppression system verification.
- Integration & SAT: Site acceptance testing alongside owners, EPCs, and system integrators from initial cold checks through commercial operation.
Field Lessons
- DC Safety Requires Absolute Discipline: DC arcs do not self-extinguish at current zero-crossings. Switchgear, DC contactors, and disconnect procedures require disciplined, verified execution every time.
- Communication Integrity is a Safety Boundary: Communication bus shielding, proper termination resistance, and clean frame delivery between the BMS and PCS are fundamental to system stability.
