Overview
La Pimienta is a 358 MW utility-scale photovoltaic generation facility in Mexico. The project represents one of the major utility-scale solar installations in the region, delivering power into the national transmission network.
My work centered on on-site commissioning, site acceptance testing (SAT), and technical execution alongside EPCs, asset owners, utilities, and SCADA integrators from initial energization through commercial acceptance.
Scope & Execution
Key areas of scope included:
- Pre-Energization Verification: Cold commissioning walk-downs, mechanical and electrical inspection, insulation verification, and control circuit ring-out.
- Inverter Parameterization: Protection settings, utility grid-code parameterization, and validation of unit availability and operating efficiency.
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT): Functional testing, emergency shutdown loop verification, active/reactive power responses, and commercial readiness handovers.
- Field Documentation & Training: Establishing standardized on-site procedures and training plant operators on safe operation and Level 1 troubleshooting.
Field Realities & Engineering Lessons
Commissioning large-scale energy infrastructure requires closing the gap between design single-lines and environmental realities on site.
- Environmental Pre-Conditioning: In high-humidity conditions, managing cabinet temperature, auxiliary heating, and anti-condensation procedures before primary energization is critical for long-term electronics reliability.
- Clear Escalation Protocols: Rapid resolution of field anomalies depends on structured technical escalation channels between site engineers and manufacturer engineering teams.
